Geophysical surveys play an important role in geothermal exploration.
Geophysical methods can provide essential data for identifying and developing geothermal reservoirs by measuring physical parameters of subsurface rocks (e.g. density, porosity, and resistivity).
- Electromagnetic methods (TerraTEM) are used to identify resistivity anomalies; lower resistivities indicate increased degree of mineral alteration and higher subsurface temperatures
- Gravity is used to identify subsurface faulting, which is essential information for drill hole planning
